Approaches to Performance Testing - By: Matt Maccaux

Performance testing a J2EE application can be a daunting and seemingly confusing task if you don't approach it with the proper plan in place. As with any software development process, you must gather requirements, understand the business needs, and lay out a formal schedule well in advance of the actual testing.

the author name this as "A best-practices approach to maximize your performance test effort"

is predicting the performance of system is possible?

i don't think so, but here's an article talk about this - the Performance Nonscalability Likelihood (PNL) metric , if this works, we can test on low-level lab, and know how the performance will be in production environment, that will save lots of efforts , time and money.

How do you know if your test team has done a good/bad job?  - test measurement metrics

„When you can measure what you are
speaking about, and express it in
numbers, you know something about
it, but when you cannot measure it,
when you can not express it in
numbers, then your knowledge is of a
meagure and unsatisfactory kind.“
from Lord Kelvin
British physicist, 1882

„You can not control what you can not
measure. Mesurement is the
prerequisite to management control. “
from Tom DeMarco
American Consultant, 1982
